<p>Yesterday night Steve Jobs passed away, a true entrepreneur, a creator, a doer of great deeds. Steve Jobs is prove of the fact that one person can influence an entire organization. He combined his vision with leadership. Steve Jobs knew how to motivate employees of Apple to give 200% to create, produce and sell the most beautiful technical devices the world has ever seen.</p>
<p>The speech of Steve Jobs is one everyone should watch. One quote of this speech is &#8216;live your life like it is your last day&#8217;, something he has certainly done.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft" title="JanKeesdeJager" src="http://roimg.nl/bestanden/afbeeldingen/regering/bewindspersonen/kabinet-rutte-verhagen/jager-jan-kees-de/de-jager-nw208.jpg" alt="" width="168" height="168" />Vandaag ontving ik een nieuwsbrief van de minister van Financiën. Het is geweldig dat er eindelijk iemand in het kabinet is die echt gebruik maakt van het internet om beslissingen naar de burgers door te communiceren. Communicatie is dankzij dit medium zo makkelijk gemaakt maar toch maken weinig politici er echt gebruik van.  Meestal blijft het bij simpele twitterberichten en korte opinie blogs.</p>
<p>In de nieuwsbrief schrijft Jan Kees de Jager over de overheidsfinanciën in kant en klare taal. Dit maakt het helder waarom hij bepaalde keuzes heeft gemaakt. Voor mij is dit een voorbeeld hoe andere ministers met de burger zou moeten communiceren.</p>
<h3>Nieuwsbrief Jan Kees de Jager</h3>
<p>De Prinsjesdagplannen zijn sinds donderdag 15 september – een dag eerder dan de bedoeling was – bekend. De kranten stonden sindsdien bol van de cijfers, meningen en reacties. En uiteraard kreeg ik ook zelf veel reacties, onder andere via Twitter. Vaak ging het daarbij over de bezuinigingen. De noodzaak van de bezuinigingen staat nog lang niet iedereen op het netvlies. Vandaar deze nieuwsbrief.<span id="more-545"></span> <strong></strong></p>
<p>Door de crisis zijn de overheidsfinanciën de afgelopen jaren sterk verslechterd. In 2008 – voor de crisis – was er nog een klein overschot op de begroting, maar in de jaren daarna sloeg dat volledig om. Nederland leeft nu in feite op de pof, en dat is geen gezonde situatie. We geven dag in, dag uit meer uit dan er binnenkomt. In 2009 was dat 87 miljoen euro per dag, in 2010 ongeveer 82 miljoen en dit jaar geven we iedere dag 70 miljoen te veel uit. Het tekort daalt, maar ook in 2012 staan we in de min; naar verwachting zo’n 50 miljoen euro per dag.<strong></strong></p>
<p>Door de tekorten is de staatsschuld flink opgelopen. In 2012 komt de schuld boven de 400 miljard euro. Dat is bijna 25 duizend euro per Nederlander. En hoe hoger de schuld, hoe meer geld we uitgeven aan rente. Ten opzichte van andere landen kan Nederland relatief goedkoop lenen, maar toch betalen we in 2012 dik 10 miljard euro aan rente. Dat is meer dan het bedrag dat we jaarlijks uitgeven aan basisonderwijs. <strong></strong></p>
<p>Dit kabinet maakt een heel bewuste keuze: we schuiven de rekening van de crisis niet door naar toekomstige generaties. We nemen nú maatregelen; maatregelen waarmee we de overheidsfinanciën op orde brengen. Dat is nodig om bijvoorbeeld de zorg, de AOW en het onderwijs ook in de toekomst te kunnen betalen. Het gezond maken van de overheidsfinanciën doen we door 18 miljard euro te besparen. Ik begrijp dat veel van de bezuinigingen hard aan komen. Maar 18 miljard euro besparen lukt helaas niet zonder ingrijpende en soms pijnlijke maatregelen. <strong></strong></p>
<p>In de Miljoenennota 2012 zien we dat de overheidsfinanciën voorzichtig uit een diep dal kruipen, maar het huishoudboekje van Nederland is nog niet op orde. Bovendien zijn er grote onzekerheden: er is onrust in de eurozone, gebrek aan vertrouwen op de beurzen en de groei van de wereldhandel neemt af. Dat alles leidt tot tegenvallende economische vooruitzichten. Juist in zo’n situatie, wanneer je te maken hebt met economische tegenwind, is het belangrijk om koersvast te blijven. Dat betekent dat we vasthouden aan ons beleid, een beleid waarin het gezond maken van de overheidsfinanciën centraal staat. Want niemand kan meer blijven uitgeven dan er binnenkomt, óók de overheid niet. <p>Overigens kreeg ik de afgelopen dagen ook regelmatig vragen over de gevolgen van de problemen in Griekenland op de bezuinigingen in Nederland. Ik kan daar kort over zijn: de 18 miljard euro aan besparingen staan los van de garanties en leningen aan Griekenland, Ierland en Portugal. Het is een wat technisch verhaal, maar ik zal het proberen uit te leggen. <strong></strong></p>
<p>De leningen aan Griekenland, Portugal en Ierland komen voor het overgrote deel uit een speciaal hiervoor opgericht Europees noodfonds. Nederland en de andere eurolanden staan daarbij garant. Het is dus niet zo dat Nederland zelf miljarden in het fonds stort. Doordat Nederland en de andere eurolanden garant staan, kan het noodfonds op de kapitaalmarkt geld lenen. Dat geld gaat vervolgens in delen – de zogeheten tranches – naar een land dat in de problemen is geraakt, zoals Griekenland. Daarbij is het belangrijk om te weten dat de Grieken alleen in aanmerking komen voor een volgende tranche als ze de gemaakte afspraken over hervormingen en bezuinigingen volledig nakomen. <strong></strong></p>
<p>De bezuiniging in Nederland zijn nodig om zelf financieel gezond te blijven. Het gaat dus niet om geld dat nodig is om het noodfonds mee te vullen. Ook als er geen problemen zouden zijn in Griekenland, Ierland en Portugal, dan nog was het voor Nederland noodzakelijk geweest om 18 miljard euro te besparen.<strong></strong></p>
<p>Gisteren, op Prinsjesdag, liep Pieter van Hofwegen de hele dag met mij mee. Als &#8216;jonge ambtenaar van het jaar&#8217; kreeg hij een exclusief kijkje achter de schermen. <p>Vandaag en morgen staan in het teken van de Algemene Politieke Beschouwingen. Dan debatteert de Tweede Kamer met de regering over de Miljoenennota en de rijksbegroting. Premier Mark Rutte voert het woord namens de regering en de fractievoorzitters spreken namens de fracties.<strong></strong></p>
<p>Vrijdag vertrek ik naar de Verenigde Staten voor de jaarvergadering van het IMF waar ik met mijn collega’s onder andere zal spreken over de internationale economische situaties, hervorming van het internationaal monetair systeem en versterking van surveillance van het IMF.<strong></strong></p>

The two might sound like worlds apart, though were united in a workshop organized by the <a href="http://nyenrode.adriaanrijkens.nl" target="_blank">Onofficiële Commissie der Ongevraagde Activiteiten</a> at Nyenrode. Monday night was dedicated to studying what philosophy is and how to use this to make profit without forgetting people and planet. The founder <a href="http://www.lerenfilosoferen.nl/test/het-bestuur" target="_blank">Rudolf Kampers</a> and  member of the board <a href="http://www.lerenfilosoferen.nl/test/het-bestuur" target="_blank">Jan Ewout Ruiter</a> from ‘<a href="http://www.lerenfilosoferen.nl/" target="_blank">Stichting Leren Filosoferen</a>’ presented the ‘Socratic method’, a conversation technique used to solve questions.</p>
<p>The group, consisting of forty Summer School, MSc and IMBA students, came up with the question ‘should there be a limit to profits in the health care field?’. Solutions to this question were formed by having a dialogue instead of a debate. The problem was approached in steps: from examples to the critical moment and the norms and values. At the end of the night, all participants knew a bit more about combining business and philosophy, a great example of the proverb ‘<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cogito_ergo_sum" target="_blank">cogito ergo sum</a>’!</p>

This was given by <a href="http://www.arjanerkel.nl/" target="_blank">Arjan Erkel</a> and <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/sezginyilgin" target="_blank">Sezgin Yilgin</a> who have written the book &#8216;<a href="http://generatieyep.nl/" target="_blank">Generation YEP</a>&#8216;.</p>
<p>The focus of the workshop was on how we as future managers and entrepreneurs can take advantage of the rise of the YEPPIES. There is great business potential when one understands that this generation can be a valuable target-group. Or valuable employees that can develop new products/services targeting people with a multicultural background.</p>
<p>An example is <a href="http://www.quotenet.nl/biz/celal-oruc-eerste-turk-in-quote-500.php" target="_blank">Celal Oruç</a> who founded <a href="http://www.ortelmobile.nl/" target="_blank">Ortel Mobile</a>. This telecom provider makes it possible to call to countries like Poland and Marocco for low rates. A percentage of around 66% of this fast growing company has been bought by <a href="http://www.kpn.com/" target="_blank">KPN</a> for an undisclosed figure (estimated at 50 million euros by <a href="http://www.quotenet.nl/biz/celal-oruc-eerste-turk-in-quote-500.php" target="_blank">Quote Magazine</a>).</p>
<p>After the presentation of Arjen &amp; Sezgin it was time to do some thinking ourselves, so we were divided in groups of 3 students. Every group was assigned to a company and the objective was to think about a new product or service that this company could offer to YEPPIES. It was a great way to put the new way of thinking to practical use.</p>
<p>The workshop &#8216;Generation YEP&#8217; has certainly broadened our visions. The business opportunities this generation presents will be taken into account in our future endeavors as managers/entrepreneurs. I challenge you to also see these business opportunities!</p>

<h3>The left side of the business model</h3>
<p>On the left side the main partners of Groupon are displayed. These are companies that offer mainly services like spa’s, piano lessons, restaurants and theaters. The key activities of Groupon is the acquisition and negotiation of partner offerings, creative writing about their daily offerings and maintenance of their website.<span id="more-459"></span></p>
<p>An other activity is the acquisition of Groupon like sites that are successful in a country. These already have created a following (customers) that is according to Groupon the most work. These followers in combination with their website are the most important resources of the company.</p>
<p>The company’s main costs are for online advertisement, infrastructure (such as servers and offices) and the employees that are located in every country. Acquisitions can also be placed here although this can be better characterized as an investment instead of a cost.</p>
<h3>The right side of the business model</h3>
<p>On the right side of the business model the customer related aspects are shown. Despite being a coupon-based service, Groupon subscribers are described as &#8220;hip, active singles who go out two or more times a week.&#8221; They are college-educated users of social media and while the demographics slant slightly toward single females, it&#8217;s not about saving money but rather spending it with friends (Gilman, 2011). These customers are attracted through social media advertising and banners that are on the affiliate’s websites. The followers receive every day an email with an offer.</p>
<p>Groupon establishes a customer relationship by having every day new offers and keeping the followers up-to-date through a daily email. This is also an important aspect for the customer relationship.  Followers are also able to rate an offering so Groupon creates an understanding of the needs of their customers. In the future Groupon can use this information to create better offerings.</p>
<h3>The value proposition</h3>
<p>By combining the left and right side of the business model canvas the value proposition of Groupon can be understood. Groupon can use its main resource (the followers) to get big discounts at service related companies. They can offer this in an easy way (through the internet) to their followers who are looking for activities that they can do with their friends. The partners will see an increase of customers who respond to the discount offering that will result in an increase of their brand value.</p>

<p>One of the things Daniel Pink discusses is the negative white space. He describes it to be a powerfull tool for drawings and logos. How many times have you seen the FedEx logo?</p>
<p>Have you ever noticed the arrow between the E and the X? If you look you will! And can you find the subtile negative white space in the HERSHEY&#8217;S KISSES logo below? (<a href="http://www.adriaanrijkens.nl/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/HersheyKisses-2.jpeg" target="_blank">If not click here to see</a>)</p>

<p>This indicates that the logo&#8217;s of companies show sometimes more then one at first site will notice. It has motivated me to analyze the GROUPON logo as part of my Innovation &amp; Creativity paper. To start with the name, the most obvious explanation is the Merger between the words <strong>GR</strong>OUP and C<strong>OUPON </strong>. But given the previous there might be MORE! At first it was difficult to find anything of extra meaning (especially a negative white-space).<span id="more-419"></span></p>

<p>Then I noticed that the G is much rounder than <a href="http://www.fontcomparer.com/" target="_blank">the average G</a>. And it has the appearance of a Power-Button.  In combination with the two last letters, that spell ON, this might make sense right?</p>
<p>So this leaves us with ROUP, I did not know if this was an English word. So I looked it up in the Oxford American Dictionary and to my amazement it has the following meaning:</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">So this leaves us with a deeper meaning &#8216;AUCTION ON&#8217; that can be compared to the saying &#8216;GAME ON&#8217;. This is known from the game industry that means something like &#8216;keep on gaming&#8217;. Is this far fetched? I might be! But after writing the previous I stumbled upon the old logo with the slogan: &#8216;Collective Buying <strong>Power</strong>&#8216;.</p>

<li>ON =4 Turn/Keep on the Power-Button to use GROUPON!</li>
</ul>
<p>And to conclude: I am using &#8216;My Whole New Mind&#8217; by not only looking different at logo&#8217;s but also at many other things. Now I have to find out if this is a curse or a bless!</p>

The office was located in the heart of Schiphol Airport. A perfect location for this successful (<a href="http://www.millwardbrown.com/Libraries/Optimor_BrandZ_Files/2011_BrandZ_Top100_Chart.sflb.ashx" target="_blank">top 5 brand</a>) multinational company to operate.</p>
<p>Microsoft introduced the students to &#8216;<a href="http://www.microsoft.com/netherlands/msnederland/microsoft-in-nederland/het-nieuwe-werken.aspx" target="_blank">Het Nieuwe Werken</a>&#8216; that gives employees the power to work wherever &amp; whenever they want. This way of working is much more then just offering a technical solution, it is a new way of collaborating that gives employees the freedom to be responsible for their own work (and not just the responsibility to be present at work from 9 to 5!).</p>
<p>At the Microsoft office there are no designated desks, no boring conference rooms and there is definitely no 9 to 5 mentality. This free environment enhances the working experience and gives employees more control over their personal &amp; professional life.  It was an inspiring Work Visit that made the students think: &#8216;Why are not all offices like Microsoft Nederland?&#8217;.</p>

<p>Dinosaurs are in fact one of the most successful species the earth has seen – they survived and prospered for 160m years (compare that to 0.2m years for our species), and many dinosaur species died out not because they could not adapt, but because of a meteorite that struck the Yucatán peninsula 65m years ago. In fact, the dinosaurs are not even extinct – a branch called the theropods adapted very well to the changing world, as evidenced by 9,000 species of birds on earth today.</p>
<p>In the corporate world, unlike what is implied in the article, my experience as an investor has taught me that it is the smaller companies that are most inefficient, and their failure rates far exceed those of the larger ones. In fact, when I meet a smaller company, the question in my mind before investing is: do you have the ability to become a dinosaur?</p>
